AI packaging mockup validation: review folds, seams, and artwork placement
AI packaging mockup validation should establish whether a concept is reviewable, not declare it ready for manufacturing. A generated carton can look plausible while putting a seam through a logo or folding a panel in an impossible direction. Use the supplied dieline and artwork as the reference for geometry and content.
Genace supplies image candidates. It does not validate print production tolerances, create a reliable dieline, or guarantee artwork fidelity. Precise mockup construction, print checks, and final production decisions belong to your packaging tools and the people responsible for the package.
Gather the authoritative files
Request the current dieline, panel labels, fold and cut indications, and approved artwork. Keep any supplied safe-area and bleed requirements with the file. Do not invent a universal margin: the appropriate values depend on the actual package and production specification.
Identify the concept’s purpose. An internal mood presentation can tolerate some abstraction if it is labeled as such. A buyer review of panel placement needs much closer correspondence with the real structure. Choose the intended review level before evaluating candidates.
Inspect panel relationships
| Area | Review question | Reject when |
|---|---|---|
| Front panel | Is the orientation correct? | Artwork rotates inconsistently |
| Side panel | Does it connect to the right edge? | Panel content crosses a seam |
| Lid and flap | Is the fold relationship plausible? | Flap passes through a wall |
| Closure | Can the package close in this form? | Tabs have no matching location |
| Artwork boundary | Does it respect supplied guides? | Important content reaches a restricted area |
Walk around the package one panel at a time. A single attractive front view may conceal contradictory side geometry. Ask for another view or inspect the real structured mockup when the concept depends on a hidden fold.
Rebuild exact elements deliberately
Use generation for material, lighting, and presentation exploration. For accurate panel content, place the approved artwork into a deterministic mockup or a photographed blank package using your own editor. Preserve the source artwork and transformation settings.
Inspect the flattened export after that rebuild. Correct layers can still be clipped by a crop or downsampled until small content becomes unreadable. Keep package correctness separate from presentation quality in the approval record.
Do not treat shadows as evidence of folds. A dark line may look like a seam while appearing in the wrong place. Compare it against the dieline and a real package reference, especially around closures and overlapping flaps.
Route the handoff correctly
Store statuses such as visual_concept, structure_reviewed, and artwork_reviewed in your application. These are internal workflow labels, not Genace job states. Production readiness should come from the responsible packaging process, with the actual source files attached.
When artwork changes, invalidate dependent exports until the updated version is checked. A previous approval should not silently carry over to a candidate with a new panel layout.
Acceptance checklist
Verify panel adjacency, fold direction, closure plausibility, supplied safe areas, artwork wording, and the intended review status. Archive the candidate, reference dieline, artwork version, reviewer notes, and final derivative so another person can understand exactly what was approved.
