video poster frame pipeline: extract and version the still used before playback
A video poster frame pipeline creates the still shown before playback. That still should come from the approved final clip or be a separately approved representative design. It is a delivery derivative, not the video itself, and it needs its own crop, encoding, and provenance.
Genace returns generated video outputs. It does not automatically extract the poster required by your player or host that derivative permanently. Frame extraction, image optimization, storage, and player markup belong to your application.
Select from the final edit
Collect and validate the completed video, then identify a stable moment that represents its content. Avoid a black opening frame, transition flash, or distorted intermediate motion. Review the entire clip before choosing the poster.
Record the source file digest and timestamp. If an editor trims the beginning later, the same timestamp can point to different content. The poster must remain linked to the exact final video version, not merely a familiar filename.
Extract a local frame
With FFmpeg installed, this example extracts a frame from an already collected video. It makes no generation request.
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:01.500 -i final-video.mp4 -frames:v 1 poster-master.png
FFmpeg documents seeking and frame-limited output in its command reference. Inspect the result before creating delivery sizes or format variants.
Maintain a poster manifest
| Field | Operational use | Review check |
|---|---|---|
| Source video digest | Identifies exact edit | Poster still matches playback |
| Timestamp | Explains selected moment | Frame is representative |
| Crop recipe | Identifies visible region | Important subject remains |
| Encoded derivative | Defines delivered still | Quality and bytes acceptable |
| Player mapping | Connects media and poster | Correct pair is served |
A player configuration should not silently point to a poster from an older edit. Store the video and poster mapping together and invalidate it when the approved video changes.
Verify the player behavior
The HTML video element supports a poster image URL, as documented by MDN. Test the real page before playback and after loading, including the crop applied by your CSS.
Do not assume that matching the video’s aspect ratio guarantees a matching displayed region. A component may fit the video and poster into a differently shaped box. Review the actual player layout at narrow and wide widths.
If the poster includes added wording, keep that copy approved and inspect it at small size. A poster that makes a claim absent from the clip should fail review even if the image is sharp.
Acceptance checklist
Confirm the poster belongs to the final video, verify timestamp and crop, inspect encoded bytes, and test the actual player before playback. Change the video in a staging exercise and confirm the old poster mapping is flagged for review. Delivery failures should trigger another extraction or upload from the archived source rather than a new model render.
