negative space image prompts: Plan room for text as a reviewable composition target

Useful negative space image prompts begin with the layout that will receive the image. Empty-looking space in a generated preview may be unusable once a headline, button, or platform crop is applied. Treat the prompt as a composition request and the final layout preview as the acceptance evidence.

Define the overlay region first

Choose the destination ratio and sketch the region reserved for text. Describe its location, approximate extent, and visual character: a quiet upper-left area, a low-detail right side, or a plain band above the subject.

Keep the required text itself outside the generated image when exact typography matters. A deterministic composition step can place approved copy using known fonts, spacing, and contrast. The prompt’s job is to provide a suitable scene around that region.

For a fictional newsletter hero, the product might sit in the right half while the upper-left area remains calm enough for a two-line heading. Save that sketch with the brief instead of relying on the phrase leave some space.

Write one concrete prompt

An example creative string is: A matte ceramic mug on the right side of a warm gray studio surface, full mug visible, soft side light, broad quiet background in the upper-left area for a later headline, no lettering or decorative objects in that area.

This is a proposed prompt, not a claim that a particular model will follow the layout exactly. The current image endpoint accepts prompt as a string and aspect_ratio as a separate field. Putting a ratio only inside the prose does not set the typed request parameter.

Keep the subject, ratio, and other approved settings stable when comparing a revision focused on space. Changing the subject scale and the lighting at the same time makes the cause of a layout improvement harder to judge.

Evaluate the actual composite

Place the real headline and any button into the planned region at delivery size. Check subject overlap, local detail behind letters, contrast, and whether line wrapping changes the required space.

Then inspect each intended crop. A square adaptation can remove the quiet area from a horizontal original. Do not assume that one candidate automatically supports every destination ratio.

A generated area can be low-detail but still too bright, too dark, or too uneven for the selected text color. Adjust the downstream layout or reject the candidate rather than calling the prompt successful based only on empty pixels.

Acceptance and revision

Save the generated asset, layout overlay, crop settings, and reviewer notes. If the region fails, revise one composition instruction and keep the prior candidate for comparison. Do not promise precise coordinates from prose alone.

Continue with logo placeholder prompts, text legibility review, and prompt revision diffs when turning a composition idea into an approved asset.
